Composite Fillings
Whether you have a sweet tooth or a habit of not brushing routinely, cavities can happen. As a result of tooth decay, cavities can cause toothaches, tooth sensitivity, and staining on the surface of a tooth. When you have symptoms of a cavity, it’s important to visit your dentist promptly to reverse tooth decay and prevent more serious conditions. Our dentists may recommend tooth restoration using fillings, including composite fillings.
What Are Composite Fillings?
A composite filling is a type of material used to restore a tooth that’s been damaged by tooth decay, returning it back to its normal function and shape. When you get a filling, the dentist will remove any decayed tooth material before cleaning the affected area and filling the tooth back in with a composite resin. Fillings are also designed to seal off spaces where plaque can enter in order to help prevent further decay.
What Are Composite Fillings Made Of?
Unlike amalgam fillings, which usually contain a combination of mercury and tin, copper, silver, or zinc, composite fillings are typically made from powdered glass and acrylic resin. One major benefit of composite fillings is that they can be tinted to match the color of your existing teeth, making them much less noticeable than other filling options and bringing a natural-looking radiance back to your smile.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Composite Fillings?
There are many types of fillings available, such as amalgam, gold, porcelain, and glass ionomer, and each has its own purpose. Composite fillings are generally recommended for small fillings, as they’re not as durable as amalgam or gold. They’re most commonly used for teeth that only experience a moderate amount of pressure when chewing or grinding, including those that are visible when you smile.
