Getting Dentures

Dentures are a set of artificial teeth that can provide both cosmetic and physical benefits for patients who need them. When someone’s natural teeth are missing, a dentist may recommend getting dentures to help improve their smile, support the structure of their mouth and cheeks and even help them chew more easily. Other people get dentures after troublesome or painful teeth have been removed.

Whether you’re just starting your journey to get dentures or you’re looking to have your current set replaced, the experts at Rutgers Health University Dental Associates are here to help. To get more information on dentures and decide if they’re the right option for you, contact our Newark office today at 973-972-2444 or our New Brunswick office at 732-235-5050.

How are Dentures Made?

In order for them to feel and function properly, dentures must be custom fit, formed and securely fastened to your mouth. In cases where existing teeth are involved, the dentures will also be visually matched. Your dentist will work closely with you to get the correct measurements. Then, they’ll have the teeth crafted from hard resin, plastic or porcelain and paired with a resin or flexible polymer gumline.

Types of Dentures

Several different types of dentures are available, including conventional dentures, immediate dentures, overdentures and implant-supported dentures to accommodate a patient’s unique needs. When a lot of teeth are being extracted, it’s common for dentists to insert a set of immediate dentures while the mouth recovers. Later, the patient might be fitted for either full dentures or partial dentures.

Full Dentures

Held in place by suction or oral adhesive, full dentures are for used for the entire gumline, on the top, the bottom or both.

Partial Dentures

When only a few teeth are missing, partial dentures can help fill in the gaps. These are usually recommended when more than one or two teeth are missing and when the surrounding teeth aren’t strong enough to support a dental bridge.

While dentures vary from one person to the next, they all have to be regularly cleaned and maintained. Because they’re artificial, it’s easier for them to crack, chip and wear down than natural teeth would.
