Am I a Good Candidate for Veneers?

Veneers, including Lumineers, are used only for cosmetic purposes. They’re designed to alter the appearance of teeth in size, shape, color and length. If you have a chipped tooth, a gap or worn down, discolored and/or misshapen teeth, you may be a good candidate to receive veneers. The only way to know for sure is to consult with your dentist or prosthodontist. They’ll look to make sure your teeth are healthy and strong. For example, if you have gum disease or don’t have enough tooth enamel to support the veneers, your dentist may suggest a different cosmetic procedure for you.

How Do Veneers Work?

Once you and your dentist have decided to move forward with veneers, the consultation process can begin. He or she will take an impression of your teeth and possibly do an x-ray. This is your chance to discuss your goals and how you want your finished smile to look. After that, your veneers will be made to match your tooth size and color. Once they arrive, your dentist may have to file down your teeth to make room for the veneers before attaching them. The total process takes anywhere from one to three visits.

Because veneers are not reversible, it’s important that both you and your dentist love how they’re going to look. Once on, they are cared for the same way natural teeth are, but usually need to be replaced after a period of time ranging from about 7 to 20 years.
