President's Message, Volume 3

When I became president of the Dental Alumni Association in October 1996, the Executive Committee and I set out to create a stable and progressive alumni association with dental students as its foundation. This required establishing cooperative, proactive, and inclusive relationships with NJDS and organized dentistry.

During the past 18 months, your association has not only built this firm foundation but has enhanced its imageas well as those of the dental school and the profession of dentistryin the process.

We are extremely proud of the efforts of all who work on your behalf. The delegates and alternate delegates of the Executive Committee are your representatives. Communicate with them directly or through this publication. The association is dedicated to creating the climate and resources to interact with and support our alumni. We envision expanding our focus to better serve NJDS graduates, as well as continuing to foster the significant improvements achieved over the past months. This publication is an example of our achievements. The Beacon conveys the excitement within the Dental Alumni Association; it reflects the commitment we've made to establish and continue a tradition of excellence; and most important, it is the cornerstone of the association's ability to communicate with alumni, dental students, and the dental community.

The Dental Alumni Association needs your support more than ever. We believe we are on the right track with the development of corporate sponsorship and licensing programs. We are considering new fund-raising and marketing to significantly improve our ability to carry out our philosophy, mission, and goals. But as Will Rogers is quoted as saying, "Even though you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

Share this excitement with us. Become active members of the association. Take time out to attend our CDE course on Oct. 16 and the reception (immediately following the course) honoring the anniversary classes, with special recognition of the 25th anniversary class. Make plans to join us at the Marriott Marquis on Wednesday, Dec. 2, for our hospitality suite at the Greater New York Dental Meeting. Consider a financial gift to support the scholarship program that this year, for the first time, expands to recognize the academic achievements of an outstanding freshman and sophomore. The association needs your support and resources to enable us to move our initiatives forward. This is your association. We stand ready to give you the opportunity to show what you can do.

We truly anticipate and appreciate your continued support of the Dental Alumni Association.

Joseph A. Battaglia, D.M.D. ('79),
