Golfers Go for the Green

by Jim Delahanty, D.M.D. ('75)

Golfers missed out on the $10,000 Hole-in-One contest prize, but the 1997 Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) Golf Classic still had a big winner: NJDS students, who will benefit from the $25,000 in scholarship money raised by the event.

The golf outing was attended by 104 NJDS faculty, staff, alumni, students, and friends at the Cranbury Golf Course last July. Sponsors included AC Dental Lab of Rahway, N.J., Block Drug Corporation, and Colgate. OKU's Omega Omega Chapter hosted the fundraiser.

Golfers received a check-in package with a golf shirt, a sleeve of golf balls, "Cavi-tees," Listerine® products, and other goodies. The day included a round of golf, lunch, course contests, dinner, and prizes.

On the par 3-hole #13, golfers had a chance to win a $10,000 Hole-in-One contest sponsored by the Mediterranean Brotherhood Association. While that prize proved elusive, there were other winners. Steve Bourque, company representative from KaVo America, won a closest-to-the-pin contest for a trip to Orlando. Dr. Rich Vogel ('71) won an $850 KaVo high-speed handpiece for his closest-to-the-pin tee shot on the 3rd hole. The longest-drive contest was won with a monstrous drive on the 18th hole by Jan Rattray.

The Classic was won with a 5 over par 75 by dental student Michael Bixby ('98). Michael is the son of alumnus Dr. John Bixby ('74), who is also an alumni member of Omega Omega Chapter.

Cocktails, dinner, and prizes followed the 18 holes of golf. "We raised $25,000 with which to begin our scholarship fund. Your generosity will be appreciated by our dental students for years to come," commented Dr. Kim Fenesy ('86), Omega Omega Chapter president, as she thanked players for supporting the golf outing.

Acting Dean Robert Saporito praised Dr. Fenesy and Omega Omega Chapter for a job well done. "Twenty-five thousand dollars is only a part of what we accomplished here today," he said. "It is projects like these that bring us together as a family, with the ultimate beneficiary being our students."
